What is the difference between traditional method of teaching and today’s more progressive approach to education?
The Traditional Methodology
Teachers have always been viewed as vehicles for imparting knowledge, information and facts to students. Instructors stood in front of the classroom and delivered information to the students. Teachers served as information ‘gatekeepers,’ deciding what to teach and what to leave out. The purpose was to educate students for life beyond the classroom by providing them with the necessary knowledge for university and beyond. There is little consideration for the kids’ uniqueness or originality in this strategy. Once a student enters the workforce, the emphasis is on molding them into an educated, ethical, constructive, and hardworking member of society. The teacher is at the center of this approach, while the students are on the peripheral.
The Progressive Methodology
The modern approach, also known as the progressive approach, on the other hand, puts the student at the center of the model. Schools that use a progressive approach are inspired by students’ curiosity and strive to create a love of learning about everything – not just the curriculum. The goal of this educational paradigm is to encourage autonomous thinking.
Teachers that utilize this strategy foster inquisitiveness and self-study by rewarding pupils for asking questions. Progressive teachers will personalize their courses to match the specific requirements of their pupils while going about their process of educating students for their goals, making the coursework more engaging and fostering an environment of joy around studying rather than dread or obligation.
At Hong Kong Coding Club, which approach do we take?
While both types of education have advantages and disadvantages, we at HKCC take a more progressive approach. You will notice on our website that we practice individualized learning, in which our students are invited to an environment in which they are free to express their creativity and curiosity with the assistance of our committed instructors. Regardless of age or educational experience, classes are tailored to each student’s learning style and level.
Why do we take a progressive method?
We want our pupils to be lifelong learners with a desire to learn and the ability to solve problems on their own. We want our pupils to be constantly engaged with fresh concepts and problem-solving techniques. We accomplish this through recognizing and honoring each student’s unique creativity and passions.
Our teachers do not hand out facts and statistics to kids and expect them to memorize and regurgitate them. Through projects, experiments, and teamwork, we foster hands-on, participatory learning. One of our greatest achievements at HKCC is when a student is able to recognize a passion and we work together to find ways to pursue it. This technique, we feel, allows students to acquire a passion for programming. We urge our students to apply critical thinking abilities outside of the classroom while evaluating their viewpoints on current events and issues.
Besides, our combination of project-based learning and physical coding tools make abstract concepts easy for children to grasp, and requires no prior computer skills to learn!
When it comes to the discussion between traditional and innovative teaching methods, we feel that hands-on, experiential learning is the best way for students to learn. Progressive education focuses on what kids care about and what critical thinking abilities they may build both inside and outside the classroom. We also believe that progressive education benefits our kids in the long run by instilling a love of learning in them. A civilization that is constantly learning is one that will evolve and grow stronger.
“Never stop learning, for life never stops teaching,” as the ancient adage goes.
